Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
