No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
