Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
